A cancel-by date is the last day you can cancel a free trial or subscription before it renews and charges you. It's the single most useful date to track — and it's not quite the same as the renewal date.

Renewal date vs cancel-by date
The renewal date is when the money leaves — the moment a trial converts to paid or a subscription bills again. The cancel-by date is your personal deadline to act, set a little earlier on purpose. Why the gap? Three real-world reasons:
- Time zones. A charge can post on the provider's clock, not yours — a "midnight" renewal might hit the evening before where you are.
- Busy days. If your only reminder is the renewal day itself and you're slammed, you miss it and pay.
- Processing. Some cancellations take a moment to go through; you want margin, not a photo finish.
A quick example
You start a 7-day trial on 1 August. It converts on 8 August (the renewal date). Set your cancel-by date to 6 August — two days early. You still get the full trial, but you've built in a cushion so nothing slips.
How to work out your cancel-by date
- Find the trial-end or renewal date (the sign-up screen or a confirmation email usually says).
- Subtract one to two days. That's your cancel-by date.
- Set a reminder for the cancel-by date, not the renewal date.
- Keep the cancellation link attached so you can act fast.
