Cancelling a password manager is the one cancellation where the order genuinely matters. The good news is that 1Password is unusually reasonable about it: a frozen account can still be signed into and exported.
Quick steps
- Export your data first. Do this before anything else.
- Sign in at 1Password.com and select Billing in the sidebar.
- Select Cancel subscription and follow the onscreen instructions.
Step by step
1. Export your passwords first. This is the step to do before you touch billing. You can still export after cancelling — see below — but doing it first means you're never relying on that.
2. Sign in on the web. Go to 1Password.com and sign in to your account.
3. Billing → Cancel subscription. Select Billing in the sidebar, then Cancel subscription, and follow the onscreen instructions. 1Password Support can also cancel for you if you'd rather ask.
Subscribed inside an app? 1Password says that if you started your subscription using an in-app purchase on a Mac, iPhone, iPad or Android device, you manage it with Apple or Google instead — not on 1Password.com. On iPhone that's Settings → your name → Subscriptions.
What happens after you cancel
- Your subscription stays active until the end of the current billing period, then the account is frozen.
- A frozen account is not a locked one. 1Password states you can still sign in on 1Password.com or in the apps to view and export your data, as long as you don't delete the account. You can restart the subscription any time.
- No refunds. 1Password states it can't refund past charges or the time remaining on your account at cancellation — so cancel near the end of the period, not the start.
- Deleting is separate and permanent. If you want your information removed from the service, that's a distinct account-deletion step. Don't do it until your export is somewhere safe.
Whatever you decide, the useful move is to put the date somewhere that will interrupt you. A cancel-by reminder a couple of days before the renewal turns "I meant to deal with that" into a decision you actually make.

Can I still get my passwords after cancelling 1Password?
Yes. 1Password states that even when your account is frozen after cancellation, you can sign in on 1Password.com or in the apps to view and export your data — as long as you haven't deleted the account. Exporting before you cancel is still the safer order.
Does 1Password refund the unused part of my subscription?
No. 1Password states it is unable to issue refunds for past charges or for any time remaining on your account at the time of cancellation, so it's worth cancelling near the end of a billing period.
