Google One is easy to cancel and easy to regret cancelling, because the consequences land on Gmail and Google Photos — and on everyone you share storage with.

Step by step
1. Check your storage usage first. This is the step to do before anything else. If you're storing more than the free 15 GB, cancelling has real consequences — see below.
2. On a computer. Go to Google One, click Settings, then Cancel membership. To confirm, click Cancel membership again.
3. On Android. Open the Google One app, tap Menu, then Settings, then Cancel membership, and tap Cancel membership to confirm.
4. Look for the confirmation email. Google sends one confirming the cancellation.
On an iPhone or iPad? Google publishes separate instructions for iOS, and if you subscribed through the App Store the subscription is billed by Apple — in which case the route is Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Check who charges you before assuming the Google One app can cancel it.
What happens after you cancel
- Nothing disappears immediately. Your Google One storage and benefits run until the end of the billing cycle.
- Then everyone drops to the free tier. You and your family members lose the extra storage; each person keeps their default up to 15 GB free. You also lose extra member benefits, access to Google experts, and premium subscriptions bundled with your plan such as Google Home Premium, Google Health Premium and YouTube Premium.
- Over 15 GB when it ends? Two things break. In Gmail you can't send or receive messages — mail sent to you is returned to the sender. In Google Photos you can't back up any photos or videos. Get under the limit before the cycle ends.
Whatever you decide, the useful move is to put the date somewhere that will interrupt you. A cancel-by reminder a couple of days before the renewal turns "I meant to deal with that" into a decision you actually make.
