Microsoft 365 has the most consequential cancellation on this list, because your storage allowance drops afterwards — and if you're over the new limit, Microsoft can eventually delete files.
Quick steps
- Go to account.microsoft.com/services/microsoft365 and sign in.
- Select Cancel subscription (it may say Upgrade or Cancel).
- Read the review section, then choose I don’t want my subscription.
Step by step
1. Sign in with the right account. Go to account.microsoft.com/services/microsoft365 and sign in with the same Microsoft account you used to buy the subscription. A different account won't show it.
2. Select Cancel subscription. Microsoft notes the option might appear as Upgrade or Cancel.
3. Read the “Please review” section. It's at the top of the cancel page and may include cheaper alternative plans.
4. Choose “I don’t want my subscription”. At the bottom of the page you pick between I want to keep my benefits and I don't want my subscription. The second one cancels.
Bought it somewhere other than Microsoft? If you purchased Microsoft 365 from the Apple App Store or Google Play, Microsoft says to contact them for cancellation or refund. If you bought it from a third-party retailer such as Amazon, contact that retailer directly. And if you bought the subscription in Germany, Microsoft offers a route that doesn't require signing in at all.
What happens after you cancel
- “Turn on recurring billing” means you're already done. If you don't see a cancel option but see that link instead, the subscription is already set to expire on the date shown and you won't be charged again. No further action needed.
- Your storage drops. Cancelling a Basic, Personal, Family or Premium subscription reverts you to 5 GB of cloud storage (covering OneDrive and Outlook.com attachments) plus 15 GB of Outlook.com storage. On Family or Premium, everyone you shared with is reduced too.
- If you're over the free allowance, things break. Microsoft states you won't be able to upload, edit or sync new files to OneDrive, and you won't be able to send or receive email in Outlook.com. After 6 months, Microsoft may delete your OneDrive and all files in it. Get your files out before you cancel.
- Refunds aren't automatic. Microsoft says not all cancellations result in a refund, and that you have to cancel first before you can check refund eligibility.
Whatever you decide, the useful move is to put the date somewhere that will interrupt you. A cancel-by reminder a couple of days before the renewal turns "I meant to deal with that" into a decision you actually make.
Never miss a renewal again

What happens to my OneDrive files if I cancel Microsoft 365?
Your storage allowance reverts to 5 GB of cloud storage plus 15 GB of Outlook.com storage. If you're over that, you can't upload, edit or sync new files, you can't send or receive Outlook.com email, and after 6 months Microsoft may delete your OneDrive and everything in it. Download what you need first.
I don't see a cancel button — what does “Turn on recurring billing” mean?
It means the subscription is already set to expire on the date shown and you won't be charged again. Nothing more to do — you can keep using it until it expires.
Will I get a refund if I cancel Microsoft 365?
Not necessarily. Microsoft states that not all cancellations result in a refund, and that you need to cancel the subscription before you can check whether you're eligible.
