Step by step
1. Sign in to Services & subscriptions. Go to account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the subscription. A different account won't show it.
2. Find the subscription. Locate Xbox Game Pass in the list.
3. Select Turn off recurring billing. Microsoft's wording is deliberate: this stops future charges and grants you the benefits until the expiration date. You aren't giving up time you've already paid for.
No “turn off recurring billing” option? Microsoft says that means the subscription is already set to end on the date shown under Expires on, and you don't need to do anything. If you bought Game Pass through a third party or with a prepaid code, the billing relationship may not be Microsoft's — check who charged you before assuming.
What happens after you cancel
- You keep playing until the expiration date shown on the subscription.
- You may be able to cancel immediately with a refund instead — Microsoft notes this is sometimes available, though not all subscription charges can be refunded.
- Games are the obvious loss. Game Pass titles stop being playable when the subscription ends; saves are kept but you'll need the subscription or the game itself to play again.
- To verify: the subscription should show an Expires on date rather than a renewal date.
