Prime is easy to cancel and easy to get wrong, because the refund rule depends on what you've used since the last charge. Here's the official route and what actually happens to your money.

Step by step
1. Open your Prime membership settings. Sign in to Amazon, go to Your Account, and open Prime membership. Amazon's own help page is the shortest path — it links straight into the membership screen.
2. Select “Update, Cancel, and more”. This is the menu that holds the cancellation option. Amazon does not put a cancel button on the main membership page.
3. Choose “Cancel Membership — forgo benefits”. Amazon will offer you alternatives on the way through. Keep going until you get a confirmation that the membership will end.
Signed up somewhere other than Amazon? If you started Prime through Google Play on Android, cancel it through Google's subscription settings. If your Prime membership is attached to another company's service, Amazon's help page says to contact that company to cancel. And if the App Store bills you for any subscription, the route is always Settings → your name → Subscriptions — Amazon can't cancel something Apple bills.
What happens after you cancel
- Refunds depend on timing and usage. Amazon gives a full membership-fee refund if you cancel within 3 business days of signing up or converting from a free trial — though the value of any Prime benefits used in that window may be charged or withheld from the refund.
- Cancel at any other time and you get a full refund only if you haven't made eligible purchases or used Prime benefits since your most recent Prime charge. Used free shipping once? That's the rule that catches people.
- To verify: the Prime membership page should confirm the end date, and Amazon sends a confirmation. Check it rather than assuming — Prime has several paths that look like cancelling but only downgrade or pause.
Whatever you decide, the useful move is to put the date somewhere that will interrupt you. A cancel-by reminder a couple of days before the renewal turns "I meant to deal with that" into a decision you actually make.
