Two things trip people up with Spotify: you usually can't cancel from the app, and if a third party bills you, that's where you cancel. Here's the right route for each case.
Quick steps (direct billing)
- Go to spotify.com/account in a browser and sign in.
- Open Available plans → scroll to Spotify Free.
- Select Cancel Premium and confirm.
Step by step
1. Use a web browser. Spotify's own app generally doesn't let you cancel Premium — open spotify.com/account and sign in.
2. Available plans → Spotify Free. Find the plan section and scroll to the free tier.
3. Cancel Premium. Follow the prompts to confirm. Your plan is set to end at the next billing date.
Billed through Apple, or a phone carrier / other partner? If you started Premium through the App Store, cancel it in Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Spotify. If a mobile carrier or other partner bills you, cancel through that provider — Spotify's account page will usually say who handles your billing. On a Duo or Family plan, only the plan manager can cancel.
What happens after you cancel
- You keep Premium until the end of the current billing cycle, then move to the free, ad-supported tier.
- Your playlists and library stay — cancelling Premium doesn't delete your account.
- To verify: your account page should show the plan ending on a specific date and switching to Spotify Free.
Premium renews every month, so it's an easy one to forget. Set a cancel-by reminder a couple of days before the renewal so keeping or dropping it is a deliberate choice.

Why can't I cancel Spotify in the app?
Spotify's app generally doesn't offer cancellation — you cancel on the web at spotify.com/account, or through whoever bills you (Apple, a carrier, etc.).
Do I get a refund when I cancel?
Cancelling stops the next charge and keeps Premium until the end of the current cycle. Spotify generally doesn't refund the remaining part of a paid month, so cancel on your cancel-by date to use the time you paid for.
